Inmarsat World Wide Coverage Map

All Inmarsat satellite phones operate over the Inmarsat global I-4 satellite network, providing reliable call stability and uninterrupted  roaming worldwide. Four Geostationary satellites cover 90% of earth's surface to deliver connectivity in every weather condition.

Inmarsat's satellite phones uses the same satellite network technology as the Inmarsat BGAN and Fleetbroadband products. The Isatphone Pro Coverage Map shows the I-4 satellite network utilized by all three products.

Isatphone Look-Angle Map

The Look Angle map gives a visual representation of the angle from the ground in a particular area, to the I-4 satellite used for communication. The farther the user is from the equator, the lower the look angle. Low look angles will have more trouble communicating with the satellite, due to the longer distance to the satellite and the greater likelihood of obstructions blocking the line of site to the satellite.

Spot Beam Coverage Map

Advanced spot-beam technology allows Inmarsat satellite phones to maintain a communication footprint stretching across most of the planet. The built-in GPS in the Isatphone Pro is used in part to pass location information to the satellite so that the satellite can assign the proper spot beam to a Isatphone Pro user. Notice that the spot beams overlap, providing near uniform coverage.

Inmarsat was the first mobile satellite provider in the world licensed to offer prepaid voice services for the US. Prepaid services are very popular with people who work on short term or seasonal projects and prefer not to commit to a lengthy contract.

“Many customers use satellite services across multiple markets and have been frustrated by being unable to use pre-paid services while in the US and its territorial waters. We are proud to be the first company to deliver a global service. This announcement exemplifies our commitment to meeting our customers' needs,” -Jim Parm, Former President of Inmarsat Solutions

Questions

Why do people need satellite phones?

Unlike cell phones that rely on cell towers, satellite phones work anywhere on earth. Once you leave the city, satellite networks are the only option offering reliable communication. American Satellite has satellite phones that work anywhere, even in the most remote areas of the world. They offer reliable Voice, Text, GPS, and SOS and will keep you connected at sea, on expeditions, long hikes, remote job sites, mountains, deserts and even during a natural disaster.

Should I rent or own a satellite phone?

If you need a satellite phone for more than 1 month out of the year or multiple times a year it is recommended to buy a satellite phone. If you only need a satellite phone for one or two weeks at a time, renting one is often a better option.

How fast can I get a satellite phone?

We can deliver a satellite phone to you as quickly as the next day if major shipping companies offer that service to your area. In some critical and emergency situations we can often deliver a device to you the same day via courier.

What is a USA phone number?

Satellite phones use international phone numbers and most cellphone users don't have international calling activated with their carrier. A USA phone number redirects calls to your satellite phone and allows anyone to reach you free of cost for them, but it will use up minutes from your plan. This option is available only on monthly service plans and costs as little as $10 per month.

What is coverage like in the south pacific (Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, South America, Galapagos Islands. etc.)?

Satellite phones offer reliable coverage in all of these areas and you will experience uninterrupted service.

Can you call 911 from a satellite phone?

Yes, calling 911 from any satellite phone will connect you to local emergency services.

Why are satellite phones so expensive?

Satellite networks have high operating costs. The logistics and technology to maintain satellites functioning properly and accurately are expensive. Therefore satellite communication technology is still priced higher than a regular cell phone.

What are the uses of satellite phones?

Satellite phones have a broad range of applications. Satellite phones are used in every industry, including travel, sailing, fishing and remote expeditions, mining and oil extraction, remote construction and emergency response because they are the only reliable form of communication when outside of cellular or VHF range.

Will I get charged for incoming calls and text?

No, incoming calls and text are FREE on any service plan.

Can my satellite phone be traced and spied on?

It's hard to trace and spy on a satellite phone. Eavesdropping on a satellite phone is virtually impossible because the signal travels vertically towards the sky - compared to cellphones where signals travel horizontally towards the cellphone towers where it can be intercepted and decrypted.

Can we talk from a satellite phone to an ordinary phone?

Yes, a satellite phone can call and connect to both landline or cellular numbers.

Which is better: VoIP or satellite phone?

It depends on what you want to use it for and whether you'll have reliable internet access when you need to make a call. If you do, VoIP is a much more affordable option. If you don't have access to internet and reliability is critical, a satellite phone is the better pick.

Can satellite phones be used indoors?

Satellite phones need a clear line to the sky to work properly. However here are satellite phone accessories such as antennas and docking stations that allow your satellite phone to work indoors.
