FAQ
Will Starlink offer satellite phone service?
While Starlink is currently beta-testing satellite internet services, the company plans to add Voice over IP as their network expands. The company also wants to include 24-hour battery backups and other useful features to their services. When the company will be able to deliver on these promises is another story. But if we look into what Starlink has planned for the future, it is quite clear that this will be the next big step in the evolution of satellite communications.
Starlink has over 10,000 subscribers in the U.S. and in Canada, but that number is likely to drop if it doesn't get approved for rollout in your area. The company plans to launch its first terminal in July and hopes to have over a million subscribers by the end of the year. For now, however, the company only offers its service via its satellite dish and router, which cost $499 each. Once it is ready, it will require customers to purchase a mountable satellite dish and a router.
Although Starlink is still in its infancy, it has made significant progress. The company released a second-generation home internet satellite dish and explored the idea of in-flight Wi-Fi in passenger aircraft. As of January, it has shipped more than 100,000 satellite internet terminals to customers in 14 countries.
In addition, it also plans to introduce low-income customers a lower-cost internet service. The lifeline program aims to make its services more affordable. These new products will be launched in September. In addition to high-speed internet, it is expected to have satellite phone service.
Starlink is aiming to reach as many people as possible and to build a constellation of satellites for complete global coverage. This is not a small investment. The companies' goal is to provide affordable internet access for everyone, but the costs are too high to guarantee a universal service for every single person. We will have to sit tight to see if it can be done.
