FAQ
Why are satellite phones banned in India?
The use of satellite phones (particularly Thuraya and Iridium) were banned in India after they were used to coordinate the 26/11 terrorist attack in Mumbai. Satellite phones are available in India, but Indian law strictly prohibits them from use without a valid license from the authorities.
Bringing a satellite phone into India without the proper paper work can lead to a fine of up to $1500USD and possible imprisonment of up to three years. Satellite phones have to either be purchased in India from an authorized distributor or can be imported into India after receiving permission from the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and possibly the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), depending on the device. Iridium and Thuraya satellite phones are illegal in India and in Indian Waters.
"Satellite phones imported for use in India without a valid permission of the DoT may be detained and appropriate action in accordance with the law may be initiated."
