FAQ

satellite phone vs cell phone

The biggest difference between a cell phone and a satellite phone is how the signal travels from the device. When you use a cell phone, your call, text, or data is sent to the closest cellular tower and then relayed to the intended recipient from there. When using a satellite phone the signal is transmitted using satellites orbiting the earth. The data sent from a satellite phone is beamed to the nearest satellite and then sent (possibly via other satellites) to the nearest gateway, a land based service centre. Then the signal is transmitted to the receiving phone.

Because satellite phones do not rely on terrestrial, or ground based networks it makes them the best option in remote areas where cell reception is spotty or non existent.

You can still use your cell phone when you are out from reach from traditional cell service with a satellite device like the Iridium Go!
