Satellite phone vs. HAM radio
Satellite Phone vs. HAM Radio
HAM radios and satellite phones are both reliable choices for off grid communication but they do differ in functionality and the technology involved to keep you connected. As with any comparison, when looking at satellite phones and HAM radios it’s important to clearly define what you want from the device, how you plan to use it, and what design features matter most to you. Some of the factors you may want to consider are cost, range, and security.
HAM radios function through a receiver, transmitter, and an antenna. HAM radios can pick up and send radio signals within a given broadcast area. HAM radios are powerful and do transmit signals a large distance, but that distance is still finite.
Satellite phones work through a network of satellites orbiting the earth. After a satellite phone connects to this network you can send texts and voice calls just like a regular phone from almost anywhere on the planet.
If you’re looking for top of the line gear both satellite phones and HAM radios can be expensive. A HAM radio requires a licence and a satellite phone will require a subscription or a prepaid plan. Generally speaking a HAM radio will be kinder to your pocket book than a satellite phone.
The biggest advantage a satellite phone has over a HAM radio is global coverage. Another is security. HAM radio signals can be picked up by anyone listening to the frequency you are broadcasting on. A satellite phone allows you to send messages and calls to a specific person (or a group of people with push to talk capability) without the whole world listening in. Now satellite phone messages can be intercepted but that requires very specific technology and the will to do so, which would be extremely rare.
If you're looking to stay connected with family and friends within a specific area a HAM radio will certainly suffice, but if you’re looking for truly global connectivity, to stay connected wherever you go, a satellite phone is your best bet.
